Artist Statement
When people ask to see my work, I’m sure what they expect are these charming and ornate masterpieces. The overarching theme of bathrooms, must not do much to fulfil their expectations.
There was one very molding quarter during my studies, where drawing things that invoked an “ew” or “gross” reaction out of my peers, began to be somewhat of a goal of mine. It all started with an animation of poop circling around in the yellow waters of a toilet bowl. This, of course, was a design for a digital watch face so it is wearable (you can find this under the “animation” in my portfolio section). It may be an odd fashion choice, but I’d dig it!
Finding my style quite literally required blood, sweat and tears. Did I mention tears? It was through tears that I became so meticulous about my whole process; even writing a step by step recipe for it. The process now has become second nature, (more of a childlike creative flow) one that I missed so much during my formal studies, and that now has evolved into a smooth and welcome transition.
Museums and galleries are easily the most trying thing about me. I love them! I can’t get enough of them! The second I get a chance, I will drag anyone around me into one. Walking amongst greatly accomplished fine artists and their beautiful (and ugly) works, taking note of how eye grabbing, vibrant colors, capture my attention and fill the room, is arguably one of my favorite things to do.
So with that, in my own work, I want to capture attention with eye burning color saturation, colors that are then accompanied by bold connecting line work. My work has been compared to stained glass, which I suppose, isn’t too far from the truth. I would love to see a stainglassed toilet, suspended within a beautiful space, against a large scaled window illuminated by sunlight. When illustrating, my favored tool of choice is the iPad, utilizing Procreate. Depending on what I want to accomplish, I will also utilize various Adobe programs such as After Effects, Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop. I amass a lot of joy in my process and the final results of a finished piece. The bringing to life bits of humor, and somewhat grotesque imagery through illustration is a lot of fun. I’d much rather draw something ugly than beautiful…it can be “befugly”.
